Getting named in an AI answer is half the battle. The other half is the sentence around your name. “X is the category leader for teams that want power” and “X works, though many users find it dated and expensive” are both mentions — and completely different commercial events.
That framing is your new first impression, delivered at scale, by a narrator buyers treat as neutral. Here's how to track it, what actually feeds it, and how to move it.
A harsh review is one voice among many, and buyers discount it. An AI's characterization isthe synthesis — it reads as the consensus verdict, because mechanically it is one: models compress what reviews, threads, and articles collectively say into a single confident sentence. When ChatGPT hedges about you (“some users report…”), it's telling every buyer what the internet's paper trail concluded. And with 800 million weekly users on ChatGPT alone,1 that verdict gets delivered more times a day than your sales team speaks in a year.
Classify every mention, not just counts. For each tracked question where you're named, log the framing: positive (recommended, praised), neutral (listed without comment), or negative/hedged (caveated, criticized). Do the same for competitors — sentiment only means something comparatively.
Read the actual sentences monthly.Aggregates hide the story. The specific recurring phrases (“popular but pricey,” “strong for enterprise”) tell you exactly which narrative the corpus has settled on — and they're remarkably consistent across questions once you look.
Expect noise, report trends. Like everything in AI answers, sentiment fluctuates run to run.2 Track on a cadence, smooth over weeks, and only act on patterns that survive the noise.
AI sentiment is downstream of the same evidence as AI visibility — reviews, threads, and editorial — but it weights the adjectives. Three source patterns dominate the negative framings we see in tracking:
Review-platform themes.Models generalize the recurring complaint in your reviews into a caveat. One theme repeated across twenty reviews (“support is slow”) becomes “users report slow support” in answers.
Unanswered threads.A Reddit thread where the top comment trashes you — and nobody credible responded — reads to a model like an uncontested verdict. Semrush's analysis of 248K AI-cited Reddit posts shows how systematically that content feeds answers.3
Stale comparisons.Old “X vs Y” articles preserve criticisms you fixed years ago. The model can't know your pricing changed if the page it reads didn't.

Unanswered threads are the best first target: common enough to matter, fully in your control, and the fastest to register in retrieval-driven answers.
1. Fix the theme, then flood the record. If the recurring caveat is real, fixing it is step zero — then actively generate fresh reviews so the corpus records the fix. Recency matters; the FTC-compliant way (real customers, disclosed asks4) is also the way that sticks.
2. Answer the uncontested threads.Respond honestly, as yourself, in the threads AI cites. You're not arguing with a stranger — you're adding the counter-evidence the model currently lacks.
3. Update the stale pages.Pitch corrections to outdated comparisons with documentation. Authors update articles that risk becoming inaccurate; their incentive is the article's credibility, not your feelings.
4. Publish your own counter-narrative — with receipts.Address the criticism head-on on your own site (“yes, we were X; here's what changed”) with dates and numbers. Direct, evidenced claims are exactly what models quote.5
Sentiment is the slowest KPI to move — narratives have inertia — but it compounds like the others: today's answers become tomorrow's training data. Start the record correction now, and pair it with the rest of the KPI stack so you can see it turn.
Beacon classifies the sentiment of every AI mention of your brand and your competitors — positive, neutral, or hedged — daily across five models, so a narrative turning shows up as a trend line you can act on instead of a feeling you can't prove.
